What is NAD+ IV therapy?

NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a fundamental coenzyme found in every cell, involved in energy production. NAD+ IV therapy is the intravenous administration of this molecule. The treatment has one particular characteristic: because rate-dependent, temporary sensations can occur during the infusion, it must be given slowly and under control. That is why sessions at IV Point take 90–120 minutes and are carried out under the supervision of an anesthesiology specialist.

What Is NAD+ and What Does It Do in the Cell?

NAD+ is a coenzyme present in every cell of your body. A molecule being a “coenzyme” means enzymes need it to do their work. NAD+ does this in four main areas:

Energy production. In the mitochondria — the cell’s power plant — it works as an electron carrier while nutrients are converted into ATP, the cell’s usable energy. Without NAD+, that cycle does not run.

Redox balance. The balance between NAD+ and its reduced form, NADH, is one of the core indicators of a cell’s metabolic state.

DNA repair processes. A family of enzymes called PARPs consumes NAD+ while repairing DNA damage. When cellular repair activity increases, so does the demand for NAD+.

Cellular regulation. Enzymes called sirtuins take part in the cell’s stress response and metabolic regulation, and they need NAD+ to work.

NAD+ levels decline with age. This decline is one of the most studied topics in the biology of aging, and it is the main reason for the interest in strategies that support NAD+.

Why Intravenously?

Taken by mouth, the NAD+ molecule passes through the digestive system. Given intravenously, the digestive step is skipped and the molecule enters the systemic circulation directly.

A boundary note — in the interest of honesty: in a pharmacokinetic study of a six-hour NAD+ infusion, plasma NAD+ and metabolite levels showed no change during the first two hours; changes appeared only after that.1 This finding shows that the body takes time to process the molecule — and it is one more reason why slow infusion is necessary.

Human data in this field is still limited, and there is no long-term safety data.2 We are not hiding that from you.

What Might You Feel During the Session?

This section matters, and most sources skip it. NAD+ infusion has a characteristic of its own.

Given too fast, it can cause a feeling of chest tightness or pressure, nausea, abdominal cramping, warmth flushing and muscle tension. These are not an allergy or drug toxicity — they are temporary, rate-dependent sensations, and they pass when the infusion is slowed or completed.3

This is why NAD+ cannot be given fast. In real-world data, the average NAD+ infusion time was reported as 97 minutes; participants slowed the rate whenever they felt discomfort.3

Our approach at IV Point:

  • The infusion is started at a low rate and increased gradually as tolerance is seen
  • We stay with you throughout the session; the rate is reduced immediately if you feel discomfort
  • Vital signs (blood pressure, pulse) are monitored
  • The session takes 90–120 minutes, and that time is not cut short

In short: the way to do NAD+ therapy properly is not to hurry it. A NAD+ infusion that finishes in 30 minutes means either the dose was low or the client was pushed through discomfort unnecessarily.

About the Formula

Contents and doses are set individually after the pre-treatment assessment. The protocol includes:

  • NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide): the main component, pharmaceutical grade
  • Glutathione: to support antioxidant defence
  • B-vitamin complex: a cofactor in NAD+ production and conversion pathways
  • Magnesium: involved in ATP production and use; it also contributes to infusion comfort
  • Fluid and electrolyte support: sterile isotonic sodium chloride solution

On the state of the evidence: the cellular roles of NAD+ are well defined. Human data on the clinical effectiveness of intravenous NAD+, however, is limited, and there is no long-term safety data.2 We present the treatment within that frame.

Who Is It Not Suitable For?

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Heart failure and serious heart disease — because of both fluid load and pulse/blood-pressure changes during the infusion
  • A history of heart rhythm disorder or chest pain — a chest-pressure sensation can occur during the infusion, so separate assessment is required
  • Kidney failure
  • Anyone receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy — not administered without your oncologist’s approval
  • Under 18
  • Known allergy to any component

Possible Side Effects

Beyond the rate-dependent sensations described above:

  • Temporary redness, tenderness or bruising at the IV site
  • Headache (rare)
  • A temporary feeling of tiredness after the session
  • Allergic reaction to a component (rare)

Equipment to respond to a possible allergic reaction is kept ready, and the treatment is carried out under the supervision of an anesthesiology specialist.

Before, During and After

Before: it helps to have eaten something light; we do not recommend arriving on an empty stomach. Tell us about your medications, chronic conditions and any heart complaints. Plan your day knowing the session takes time.

During: 90–120 minutes. You can rest in a comfortable chair, work or read. If you feel any discomfort, just say so — the rate is reduced immediately.

After: a temporary feeling of tiredness can occur. We recommend drinking plenty of water.

When Should You See a Doctor Instead?

Some of the complaints that bring people to this treatment can be signs of conditions that need investigating:

  • Ongoing fatigue — B12, iron or vitamin D deficiency and thyroid dysfunction should be looked into
  • Progressive forgetfulness, word-finding difficulty, trouble with daily tasks — these require cognitive assessment
  • Chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Low mood or loss of interest lasting more than two weeks

We make no such promise. If mental clarity is your concern, we recommend first investigating identifiable causes such as B12, thyroid function and sleep.

Wouldn't an oral NAD+ supplement be enough?

Oral studies with NAD+ precursors (such as nicotinamide riboside) exist, and the field is developing. The intravenous route skips the digestive step. Which route suits you is something we decide together at the assessment.

How many sessions are needed?

We do not propose a fixed course program. Frequency is decided at the assessment, based on your needs.

When will I feel the effect?

It varies from person to person, and there is no reliable data on this. We do not give a definite timeframe.

Allow for the session length: 90–120 minutes, plus the physician assessment beforehand. Does it hurt?

A mild sting is felt as the IV line is placed. The sensations that can be felt during the infusion are described in detail above and are managed by adjusting the rate.
